CAREER SUICIDE, VACANT STATE AND OAF AT THE ASTORIA IN VANCOUVER, BC JAN 17, 2016

So this gig was originally supposed to have Long Knife from Portland on the bill but they bailed for whatever reason. But regardless of that the gig still started at a reasonable hour (rare for Vancouver) which is cool for a Sunday night.

Career Suicide

Hailing from Toronto, these guys play DC style 80’s hardcore with a modern twist. They played a fairly long set which is understandable considering their popularity, which was quite obvious cause people were going nuts. The singer was very energetic and interactive with the crowd, but I felt like during the breaks his banter was a little much. Musically the band ripped it through the set, their 15 years history is apparent with the level of hardcore professionalism. I did really appreciate the Inepsy cover they played too, very nice surprise.

Vacant State

Local hardcore band. These guys have a Boston hardcore kinda thing going on, with some songs slowing down to an aggressive stomping oi! tempo. The band had a solid pissed off stage presence and didn’t wear out their welcome with any wasted time or bullshit. Fans of the genre should check them out.

OAF

Predominantly U.S. style hardcore with bits of other international influences thrown into the mix. Since seeing them last they have a new drummer who seems to add a bit of U.K. style hardcore with the heavy use of tom beats. The vocalist rages like a fucking psychopath which is exactly what you need for this style of music; hard hitting, with catchy mid tempo parts laced into most of the songs. Their set was tight and I consider them a choice local act, they can please the punks and the hardcore folks all at once.
